If it'd been my mother, I'd have stopped talking to her for a really long time ...

[identity profile] a-t-rain.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Although, in her defense, I got the sense that she doesn't really "get" Internet social networks -- it sounds like that the idea that people forge real, serious friendships online was, and probably still is, a completely foreign concept to her.

Fair enough. I mean, I still have people try and explain to me that my friends online aren't "really friends." *Rolls eyes*

That's true. Like this quote:

I was exceedingly miffed. In my technologically simplistic ethic, time spent on a computer is equivalent to squandering one’s youth in a drug-soaked brothel, but at least it would enable me to win the bet.

I think she was trying to be funny there, but it still makes her seem really, really thick. (I mean, come on, lady, Myspace or whatever is NOT rocket science.)

See more discussion of this same incident here and here.

Ugh. That would definitely be a blow to my relationship with my mother.

I think the saddest thing is that she felt she felt she had to pretend to be someone else to get to know her son better. I suppose she didn't try actually talking to him?

Good God, it's Ann Atkins. I knew she was a raving Tory, but I didn't think she was quite that twisted.

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Very.

Honestly, I think people who pretend to be teens are creepy even when they don't have any harmful or malicious intentions.

[identity profile] melusinahp.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... that's just shocking. What an amazing invasion of privacy. And then she chronicled the whole thing publically in a newspaper? Way to humiliate your kid. Jeeze.

[identity profile] author-by-night.livejournal.com 2006-12-13 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course, now that I think about it, people in fandom have done pretty much the same thing. Heh.

It's true, but betraying your child's trust is a bit different than betraying the trust of people on your friends list. Not that the latter is okay, but it seems particularly invasive for a mother to fool and spy on her own child like that.

Second time in a day I've come over here on a rec! ([livejournal.com profile] tunxeh this time) I think I'm going to have to friend you now.

Anne Atkins appears on my radio from time to time in the mornings. If you hear me swearing and ranting at the radio at about 7:45, it's Anne Atkins what did it.

But I didn't think she was capable of stooping to this. It's just not right. Yuck.
