Today over 1,000 students around Minnesota walked out of school to protest the US involvement in the Iraq war and also the presence of military recruiters on campus.
Now, that's all well and good. What I don't get is that some of these kids got their parents to write them notes to get them out of school. They didn't want an unexcused absences to go down on their records.
Firstly: it's a war protest, not a dentist appointment. Secondly, if your mommy gives you permission to go to the protest, you're not a rebel making a great statement against "authoritah." Not even close. That's the coward's way out and it's just silly.
That said, I did not go to the protest. Not only because I don't have a car, but also because I don't think I could properly get into it the spirit. Not that I approve of the US's military actions; far from it. And it's not like the thought didn't occur to me to walk out at about 11:00, but that wasn't really because of agitation with the way the administration has handled foreign affairs. I was just kind of bored. I would feel a bit of a fraud, basically.
